About Team Sadie

Having worked as a Counselor for over 30 years, my goal was to retire and be able to combine therapy and my love for horses.

My dream came true when a friend came across      a sweet mini horse that needed to be re-homed.  That was the start of my dream becoming a reality.

I have worked hard to develop "Team Sadie", which includes myself, Estella Hoskins, a certified handler, and my horse Sadie, a 35", buckskin, mini-horse.

It has been a blessing to reach out and share my passion with others in hope of offering compassion and comfort through the touch of a mini-horse.

Thank you for following us along on our journey!

Meet Sadie - Dignity Health's New Miniature Therapy Horse!

Patients at Mercy San Juan Medical Center rang in the New Year with a special four-legged friend at their bedside. Sadie, a three-year-old buckskin miniature horse, visited the hospital December 31 to kick off what will be routine weekly trips in 2020!

Sadie spent time visiting with patients who are often admitted to the hospital with diagnoses ranging from an acute stroke, seizures, to a traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. As a means of supporting a holistic approach to health, wellness and healing, the Dignity Health Neurological Institute has worked diligently this past year to bring this alternative therapeutic modality for patients.

Equine therapy helps to promote physical, occupational, and emotional growth in patients. The teams’ hope is that Sadie’s presence will help even outside of the hospitals walls by helping to raise awareness in the community of neurological challenges, signs/symptoms, and treatment and preventative measures.

What is Equine Therapy?

Equine Therapy is a form of therapy that makes use of horses to help promote emotional growth. There is sense of calm and connection between horses and people that has shown positive results. Horses behave similarly like human beings and can respond immediately, giving feedback, and mirroring  emotions.

Equestrian Therapy can be applied to individuals with ADD, anxiety, autism, dementia, delayed mental development, down syndrome, and other genetic syndromes. Depression, trauma, brain injuries, behavior and abuse issues, and other mental health issues.

Equine Therapy aims to:

  • Build sense of self-worth, self-concept

  • Improve communication

  • Build trust and self-efficiency

  • Develop socialization skills and decrease isolation

  • Learn impulse control and emotional management

  • Set perspective

  • Learn their limits or boundaries.
